In a nook of the Brendon Hills lies one of Somerset's many 'gateways to Exmoor ', the town of Wiveliscombe.  Known affectionately as Wivey, this historic market town   is set in wonderful surroundings on the edge of Exmoor, in the Brendon Hills. The area is known as the 10 parishes, with Wiveliscombe - surrounded by Ashbrittle, Bathealton, Brompton Ralph, Chipstable, Clatworthy, Fitzhead, Huish Champflower, Milverton and Stawley - forming the hub. While the population of 2,670 is small for a town, the shops and services meet the needs of a much larger population, spread through the western fifth of Taunton Deane, in scattered farms and villages. A survey in 1997 revealed that there were at least 300 businesses within a 5 miles (8 km) mile radius of the town; 14 of these were trading internationally and a further 20 nationally. Wiveliscombe is also home to two breweries, The Nuttycombe Brewery and Exmoor Ales. It is also one of the first towns in the UK to set up a completely free goods and services exchange forum for the local ten parishes area. The community radio station 10radio is based in the town, serving the community of the ten parishes from which its name is derived. 105.3FM in the local area and via the internet at www.10radio.org.
'Wivey' is a thriving local centre surrounded by attractive countryside that is never far away. It contains numerous shops, many still with their Victorian frontages, whilst the pubs stock ales from the town's two breweries. Follow the Historic Town Trail - unlock the town's history and discover why Wiveliscombe was directly involved in the London Blitz.
There's an impressive wealth of creativity to be discovered in the surrounding parishes, with artists, potters, sculptors and photographers taking part in the 10 Parishes Festival which takes place in and around Wiveliscombe. Local artist, Michael Fairfax recently unveiled a public art sculpture to be used as a tourist information point in the town's square representing local history and features.

Wiveliscombe is a friendly, peaceful and active community where everyone has the choice to become involved in the many clubs, societies and community groups in the town and surrounding area. There are excellent primary and secondary schools, a health clinic, and a busy community centre in the main square which acts a focal point for many local initiatives. Wiveliscombe's sporting tradition - especially rugby - is evident through the well-supported rugby football club based at the town's recreation ground, which also boasts a popular heated outdoor pool and tennis courts.  As well as  cricket.

The 108th Wivey Show will take place on August 17th 2024 at the recreation Ground, Wiveliscombe between noon and 5pm.  The usual trade stands, the town band, the flower and produce displays, Bar and Cream Teas will all be there plus much more. Formerly known as The Wiveliscombe Flower Show and Fete

COMING SOON NEW FOR 2024 THE  KNOT

Back in 1971 our owners introduced a discount for Tourists using British European Airways  to get discounts from various shops and services in the UK.  It was very successful. So today for 2024 we are reviving the system in this area to back local independent businesses in Somerset to get greater custom and footfall. This is only for small independent traders and may only be used upon personal presentation. We invite all local independent traders to participate in this enterprise. Our representative will be pleased to meet with interested traders to include them in this handbook. Please contact us by email to: info@wessextouristboard.org.uk if you are interested.

LOOK OUT FOR THE SIGN
The Wessex Tourist Board will be adding the Knot logo beside the name of the shop or service providers who participate in allowing discounts to visitors in their online Tourist guides for Bridgwater, Chard, Taunton, Mendip, Wellington, West Somerset, Wiveliscombe and Yeovil. Look for the sign in the guides and shop window stickers.

KEITH FLOYD MEMORIAL PLAQUE
CELEBRITY chef Keith Floyd, who grew up in Wiveliscombe, now has a permanent memorial in the town. A bas relief plaque of the raconteur, renowned for his groundbreaking approach to TV cookery, has been put on a wall at the top of Silver Street, where he lived as a child. It is the work of Wiveliscombe sculptor John Alder, who spent years fundraising through the Keith Floyd Memorial Project following his death in 2009. Keith grew up in the town and attended Wellington School, before the start of a flamboyant playboy lifestyle. His days in Wiveliscombe are ones he looked back on fondly, saying in 2005 his time there played an 'important part' in his life. In a chequered career, he was an army officer, a journalist, a dishwasher, a bartender, a cook, a restaurateur, with restaurants in France, Spain, Britain and Thailand. He wrote dozens of books and presented a number television series, which were screened around the world as he shot to fame. After dying from a heart attack in 2009, aged 65, the culinary world paid tribute to the eccentric restaurateur.

ST. ANDREWS CHURCH

Church in Wiveliscombe was first documented in 1179 and during the reign of Bishop Ralph a new church was built on the same site. Whilst evidence of the design and site of this church building is limited it is known that there was a particularly handsome carved and gilded oak rood screen and carved oak seat ends and pulpit. Surprisingly it is also known that the entrance used to be in the south aspect rather than the current north. In 1826 the pillars in the church were found to be out of perpendicular and the cracked tower oscillated when the bells were rung. The County Surveyor was engaged to carry out an appraisal. He concluded that the necessary repairs would cost £3,109 whereas a new building to his design with catacombes would cost £4,185. A parish meeting agreed to the latter proposals and the foundation stone for the new church was laid on 6th June 1827. The new St Andrew’s was consecrated in 27th October 1829 by Bishop Henry Law with the cost being borne by all rate payers in the parish.
The new church built in gothic style increased the seating capacity by 558 seats to 1250. There have been several reorderings of the interior since then with the most significant being in 1914 when the sanctuary was remodelled and the large oil painting of Jesus by West County artist William Brockedom was replaced by the rose window in memory of Lieutenant Ralph E Hancock DSO son of Frank and Mariquita Hancock of Ford. An organ was first installed in 1845 it was much enlarged and moved to the south aisle in 1892 before being moved back to the gallery in 1929. Further enhancements have also been made in 1995 and 2000. The organ is now used not just for services but also for frequent concerts and recitals. The oldest part of the church is the 12th century Norman Font which was returned in 1924 from the garden of Berry’s on Town Hill where it had been used for many years as an ornament.
The Church Crypt was also used in the Second World War for the storage of valuable and precious Church furniture, ornaments and records from all over the country. A famous quote is often attributed to Winston Churchill on finding out that many valuables were being hidden in St Andrews Church: "Where in the world is Wiveliscombe?" BBC Radio 4 programme Making History investigated the parish church of St Andrew’s.

WIVELY LINK COMMUNITY TRANSPORT
Wivey Link has been going places with the people of the 10 Parishes and their surrounding areas since 2004. From the time it was set up as a community transport to combat rural isolation, it has grown steadily. Inaugurated as a Charity in 2009, its presence is an essential part of the community in which it serves. In January 2010 after an intense period of fundraising, we were delighted to take delivery of two new Peugeot people carriers. Another replacement Toyota Yaris was also purchased in May 2011.  Running weekdays and some weekends, Wivey Link provides a lifeline for those unable to access transport for what ever reason. We are not just for medical journeys to hospital or for those with disabilities, but for anyone of any age needing to get from A to B. The service is available to all residents in the area. Our volunteer drivers are the backbone of the service, keeping two wheelchair accessible people carrier

NUTTYCOMBE BREWERY
Cotleigh had been brewing in the West Country for over 35 years and with an extensive line up based around the core brands of Tawny Owl, Commando Hoofing, Golden Seahawk, Buzzard and Barn Owl, all of which were available in cask and 500ml bottles. Harrier, Cotleigh 25 and Honey Buzzard completed the range of permanent cask beers.
Unfortunately in September of 2021 the brewery was forced to close permanantly.

Ross Nuttycombe, a well established and much admired publican who has owned the Star Inn at Watchet for around 12 years has now purchased the brewery and brewing started on the site again in May 2022, now under the new Nuttycombe Brewery brand. A recent addition is their new Hancock's Dray Taproom where functions will be held. See https://www.facebook.com/hancocksdray

EXMOOR ALES
Exmoor Ales typically would be categorised as a small regional brewer.  Founded in 1980, it was then amongst the first wave of "Micro Breweries". The business has invested and expanded progressively becoming the leading cask ale supplier in the immediate region, directly delivering to around 300 outlets and nationally well represented in the well known pub companies on a regular or guest ale basis. Exmoor had a "flying start" during its early life by winning the Best Bitter national award at the GBBF in 1980…with only its 13th brew. The beer was known simply as "Exmoor Ale", being a classic 3.8% session beer. Many further awards were to follow, and today remains the backbone of the range in the region. Exmoor’s reputation for innovation and quality is well marked by its multiple award-winning "Exmoor Gold", being the first single malt "Golden Ale", which then started up whole new category of cask ale style throughout the country. Other particularly distinctive beers in the range would be exampled by "Exmoor Stag", a very serious 5.2% premium bitter (and the Head Brewers favourite) which was initially brewed as the "Centenary Ale" for Somerset County Cricket Club, which became so liked it has been brewed ever since (1990). Also "Exmoor Beast", a heady 6.6% being amongst the most famous in the strong dark porter category of beers.

HAGLEY BRIDGE FARM
Hagley Bridge Farm, near Bampton, Wiveliscombe, Wellington and Milverton is an idyllic location to stay, relax, walk and learn about small scale dairy production!  We are situated next to the River Tone in a hidden Somerset valley surrounded by awe inspiring Exmoor landscape. We are also the home of the Red Devil Cheese Company.
The Red Devon Cheese company has come about over the past eight years, as a result of combining our weekend cheese making courses, and the development of a range of unique cheeses produced at the farm exclusively from milk from our own herd of  Devon crossed, Shorthorn and Channel Island cows. This produces milk for high quality cheese making. The cheese production is seasonal, to fit in with the grass growing period. The cows graze permenant pastures, our husbandry is based on strong organic principles, although we choose not to be,certified by the soil association anymore. We continue to farm in a sustainable way, as we have done for over 25 years. This all contributes to the wealth of flavour found in our cheese. The cheese courses are run separately to production, but during the same months of the year from April to November.

Books about Wiveliscombe
THE WIVELISCOMBE STONE TAPE: LOCAL TALES OF MYSTERY (Paperback)
by Adam Martin (Author)
This town has not yet whispered its secrets to the world until now. Wiveliscombe at the gateway to Exmoor National Park holds on to countless secrets and stories. This book explores these unheard supernatural tales in a new light, brought to life with mystical full colour and monochrome illustrations by the author. The roots at the heart of this book go back many generations, yet they have over time become tangled and confused. This book is the first of its kind in documenting and exploring the mysterious tales that are embedded in the landscape of Wiveliscombe, Somerset. From strange dark entities that stalk churchyards darting between headstones to mysterious big cats that evade even the keenest hunters, this town has many tales to tell. Now the time has come for them to be listened to once more, whether you are a skeptic of the supernatural, a believer, or simply someone who yearns to find answers.

Wiveliscombe: A History of a Somerset Market Town Hardcover
available at the Post Office in Wiveliscombe
From the cover: “Lying in the lee of the Brendon Hills, mid-way between Exmoor and the Vale of Taunton, this ancient market town has a rich history dating from Neolithic times. The sweet water and good grazing attracted Romans, Saxons and 750 years of an ecclesiastical presence. The personality of the town has been further shaped by 500 years of a flourishing woollen industry, ‘the biggest “bewrey” in the West of England’ and a strong agricultural heritage. Wiveliscombe’s role as the focus for the villages and settlements of the Brendon Hills has contributed to its very individual nature and continued success as a working town. This is an account, researched and written by the Wiveliscombe Book Group, of roads and railways, businesses and buildings, charabancs and chickens, rabbits and ‘Rubies’, told using the words and images, memorabilia and reminiscences, of those who live in, or have had long association with, the town.”
