List of  Top Wessex Football Clubs Season 2010/11
Aldershot Town
League Division 2
Aldershot Town Football Club was founded in the spring of 1992 just after the closure of debt ridden fourth division club Aldershot F.C., who had been founded in 1925 and had been league members since 1932. Like the old club, the new Aldershot football club played its home games at the Recreation Ground in Aldershot town centre. They joined the Ryman (Diadora) League Division Three for the 1992-93 season, and at the end of 1997-98 won promotion to the Premier Division of the league. Two years later they finished runners-up in the Premier Division and just missed out on a place in the Nationwide Conference, but achieved this success at Ryman Premier Division champions at the end of the 2002-03 season. In 2003-04 Aldershot Town qualified for the Conference National promotion playoffs but lost on penalties to Shrewsbury Town in the final. The following year they lost in the semi-final to Carlisle United.

1897: The club is renamed Bristol City Football Club and made into a limited company after a famous meeting in the Albert Hall, Bedminster. A decision was made to employ a manager, so contact was made with Sam Hollis at Woolwich Arsenal. One of his first assignments at Bristol City was to assemble a squad of players to take part in the Southern League - he was given a trans fer fund of £40!

The present football club can trace its roots as far back as 1890 when Boscombe St. Johns Institute Football Club were playing in local football. They disbanded in 1899 and from the remains of that club, Boscombe FC were formed at a meeting under the streetlights in Gladstone Road, Boscombe. The Club competed in the Bournemouth and District Junior League playing at a ground in Castlemain Avenue, Pokesdown. They moved to Kings Park, adjacent to the current stadium in 1902 and were soon emerging as the top team in the town. After enjoying many local successes, they joined the Hampshire League and were attracting large crowds. In 1910 they moved to their own ground, named Dean Court   the club continued to thrive and dominated the local football scene. The club signed their first professional player in 1910, B.Penton, who signed from Southampton for a £10 fee. The club then moved in to the South Eastern League but this proved to be a big leap and the side finished bottom of the table. With the outbreak of war in 1914, the progress of the club was halted and they returned to the Hampshire league in 1919. The club was ambitious and when the Third Division was formed in 1920, they moved up to the highly competitive Southern League as many clubs in that league went on to form the Third Division. After three years in the Southern League, the club applied for membership of the Football League. The application was accepted and Boscombe would be playing in the Third Division (South) in the 1923-24 season.

Until very recently it was thought that Cheltenham Town Football Club was founded in 1892. However, recent evidence points to the origins being five years earlier when Mr Albert Close White returned to his native Cheltenham from college in London to take up a teaching post. While away on his studies Mr White discovered the game of association football and he is now credited with being the first person to introduce the sport to the town of Cheltenham. Trials were held at the East Glos Cricket Ground in 1887 and the club was born.

League Division 1
Formed in 1904, The Grecians moved to St James’s Park in 1906, where they still play to this day. They have had a host of players playing for them, who have moved on to play at the highest level including Lee Sharpe, Cliff Bastin and Dick Pym, who all got caps for England. They were also in the news in 2002-03 when Uri Geller became Honrary Co-Chairman. He went on to appoint Music King Michael Jackson and Star Wars Legend David Prowse as honorary Directors. Since this however the running of the club has been taken over by a supporters’ trust.  Their biggest game of recent times was against Manchester United in Dec 2004, and they caused a huge surprise by holding United to a 0-0 draw.

Forest Green Rovers  Football Club
Conference
Forest Green Rovers were Founder members of the Gloucestershire County League in 1968-69 season, where the enjoyed 7 years of football, before joining the Hellenic League Premier Division. They went on to become champions of this league in 1981, getting promoted to the Southern League Midland Division and also doing the double by winning the FA Vase also. In 1989, the club changed it’s name to Stroud, however this was short lived and was changed back to Forest Green Rovers in 1992. In 1995, Rovers switched to play in the Southern Division, and won the league in the 96/97 season – in turn winning promotion to the Premier Division. Rovers didn’t stop there and went on to win the Southern League Premier Division in the debut season, earning promotion to the Conference league. They have since come runners up in the FA Trophy in 1999 losing narrowly to Kingstonian 1-0 in the final. Also came runners up in 2001 again losing 1-0 but this time to Canvey Island.

Along with many other clubs who eventually achieved league status, we started in 1893 as an amateur club, called Headington United, a village team known locally as "the boys from up the hill".After the Second World War we were still a tiny set up playing in the Spartan League. But in 1949 the club was elected to the Southern League and became a professional unit.By 1953 the side had won the first of its Southern League Championships and in 1954 reached the Fourth Round of the FA Cup beating League clubs Millwall and Stockport County before losing 4-2 to Bolton Wanderers.
The appointment of the former Birmingham City manager Arthur Turner as manager in 1959 was another turning point in the club's history. And in 1960, to increase appeal to the whole city and increase national recognition, the club name was changed to Oxford United.Turner guided United to two more Southern League titles and when Accrington Stanley folded in 1962, Oxford United was elected to the Fourth Division of the Football League.

AT the turn of the last century of the old millennium, F Howard Grose and W Pethybridge, both former pupils of Dunheved College in Launceston, Cornwall, shared rooms in the newly-built Argyll Terrace (sometimes known as Argyle Terrace) while working in Plymouth. The two men wanted to pursue their interest in football and it was suggested that it might be possible to form a new club by inviting old boys from local public schools to form a team. In those days, public schools and the services were the spawning-grounds of footballers The name Argyll itself derives from the Gaelic Earraghaidheal meaning "the boundary of the Gaels".

In 2001 the move from the Dell to the new Friends Provident St Mary’s Stadium was something of a spiritual homecoming for Southampton Football Club. The team that play in red and white today can trace their roots back to the club formed in 1885 by members of St. Mary's Church Young Men's association who played their football on the banks of the Itchen for 13 years before moving on. Unfortunately the team they were relegated to the Championship in 2005.

The history of Torquay United doesn't begin with just one club; it begins with three: Torquay United, Ellacombe and Babbacombe. The merging of these three clubs is covered in The History Of Plainmoor elsewhere on this site, and it is a great story - a great story indeed. As Torquay Town, the club shared Plainmoor with their local rivals Babbacombe, and for the seasons running up to the beginning of the First World War, both clubs played in the Plymouth and District League
Pressure began to mount in favour of Torquay Town and Babbacombe coming together.Torquay Town and Babbacombe finally became Torquay United in 1921, and the new club joined the Western League .United played four seasons in the Western League (finishing in sixth, fourth, fifteenth and sixth places respectively). In 1927, after being crowned champions at the end of their fifth season in the Western League, the club decided to try for Football League status a second time.
They were elected to Division Three (South) of the Football League, taking the place of Welsh club Aberdare.

Looking back at Yeovil's past is like delving into the annals of FA Cup giant-killing.When the cult football game 'subbuteo' launched their one-and-only non-league team, it was Yeovil they chose.Certainly the magnificent Huish Park Stadium, opened ten years ago, is a far cry from the club's beginning back in 1895.Formed as the Yeovil Casuals, it was another twenty-five years before a merger took place with Petters United and the 'new'club moved to Huish.Season 2002/2003 has seen the club finally achieve it's ambitions of League football when they swept to the Conference Championship by a record 17 points.Season 2004-2005  The Glovers were crowned Champions for the second time in three seasons.

Sidney Bathgate
THE SID BATHGATE APPRECIATION SOCIETY
This page has been prepared by the Sid Bathgate Appreciation Society. In memory of a real footballer. Sidney Bathgate was born on 20th December 1919 in Aberdeen. Served in the RAF during the Second World War. Career History - Chelsea Football Club, Hamilton Academicals, Parkvale, Huntly, Keith, Elgin City, and Deveronvale. Married with 3 sons & 2 daughters. Retired from Football 1958. Passed Away: Age 43 in 1963. He played 147 games for Chelsea between 1946-53. A hard tackling fullback who epitomises all those journeyman footballers who graced the game.  When we started this column we were contacted by his grandaughter who was delighted that her grandpop was thus remembered as our man to represent football.

One of the biggest internet success stories, Soccernet was started by a brainy 12-year-old from the family PC and is now a mulit-million pound operation. It's strength lies in the swiftness with which it reacts breaking stories and then follows them up with insightful analysis. If a big name manager resigns, for example, you can bet that Soccernet will be onto the story within minutes. There's also a specialist section for every club in the country.

The style is very much that of a tabloid newspaper, so the stories may not be entirely accurate, but they're always entertaining. It's nice to see that it doesn't just concentrate on the big boys too, featuring over 80 teams from Birmingham to Burnley.

Soccer Ball
A recent survey showed that the Chelsea site is visited more often than every other official club site put together - and on this evidence it's easy to see why.Lavishly presented and entirely comprehensive, the site nevertheless manages to retain its sense of humour - a characteristic needed in abundance by fans of the team. Even if you don't support Chelsea, you'll find the interactive tour of Stamford Bridge a good reason to visit. And fans can spend hours rifling through the news, views and chat pages. The Informed Investor was launched at Stamford Bridge in 1972.
However all supporters should realise that the original Chelsea Football & Athletic Club no longer exists.  It was put into liquidation over a decade ago. It is no longer  the club of Hughie Gallagher, Roy Bentley, Jimmy Greaves, Peter Osgood, Charlie Cook  etc or  the wonderful brainchild of the Mears family. A new site called the Syd Bathgate Appreciation Society  will shortly be launched for those of you who supported the real Chelsea!

THE BATTLE OF STAMFORD BRIDGE
THE TRUE STORY

The Battle of Stamford Bridge in England is generally considered to mark the end of the Viking era. It took place on September 25, 1066, shortly after an invading Norwegian Viking army under King Harald HardrådeEdwin of Mercia and Morcar of Northumbria at Gate Fulford two miles south of York.  King Harold Godwinson of England met Harald with an army of his own, taking him by surprise, unarmoured and unprepared, after a legendary forced march from the south of the kingdom. defeated the army of the northern earls

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (SA 1066), the Stamford Bridge was immediately held by a powerful individual Viking who delayed the approaching English; he was finally brought down by a spear from underneath the bridge. This delay gave Harald Hardråde time to form his army in a circle on high ground and let the English approach uphill with their backs to the river. After a stubborn battle with losses on both sides, although particularly bad for the unarmoured Vikings, Harald Hardråde and Earl Tostig both fell. The arrival of Norwegian reinforcements prolonged the battle, but in the end the Norwegian army was decisively defeated. King Harold Godwinson accepted a truce with the surviving Norwegians, including Hardråde's son Olaf and they were allowed to leave after giving pledges not to attack England again.

This battle marked the end of full scale invasions of England from Scandinavia, and was the turning point of Viking activity in that area. King Harold's success was not to last, however. Little more than a fortnight after the battle, on October 14, after having marched his army all the way from Yorkshire, he was defeated and killed by Norman forces under William the Conqueror, at the Battle of Hastings. Thus began the Norman Conquest of England.

Roman Head Wise Head THE BATTLE OF STAMFORD BRIDGE
THE UNTRUE FAIRY TALE ?

Once upon a time circa 1905 AD an underground system was being built in Londinium, the main metropolis of England. The problem for the great builder of the time Gustavus Mears was to find a site to put all the earth from the excavations. Eventually he found a spot in the borough of Fulham next to the Bridge over Stamford Brook. What should he do with this mound of earth? He decided to make an arena for the the populace to watch many warriors run or kick a ball or for dogs to run around. He called this arena Stamford Bridge and  for 76 years he and his descendants ran this arena and provided entertainment for the populace of Londinium. But in 1982 AD those descendants fell upon hard times and were forced to sell their mound of earth to a Property Company and the array of ball kickers to an invader from the North named Bats for £1. Bats was an adventurer who had previously been involved in the northern territories of Wigan and Oldham.

His reign of terror saw the ball kickers dive down to the lowest point in their history. Meanwhile the accounts were run so well that the ball kickers became bankrupt owing some £12 million.  Was Bats disturbed- Oh no he immediately re-introduced the ball kickers under a similar name and went about business again. He got the supporters of the ball kickers to buy the mound of earth and set about building himself an hotel and other facilities there. He even called in ballkicker scribes to announce his own divorce. For film buffs of Psycho it is interesting to note that he employed a man called Hitchcock and ran an hotel. He also hired many mercenaries from other tribes including Gauls, Romans and Slavs. By 2004 AD he had once more run into debt- this time owing some £60 million..

At the eleventh hour a Knight in Shining armour appeared from the East and saved the ball kickers from extinction. This lovely man called Roman paid off the debts and made the ball kickers champions of  All England. For a while Bats remained but as he was no longer chief of the ball kickers he took a pay-off of some £17 million and went back up North to Leeds to try his luck with another group of ball kickers who had fallen on bad times.
And having taken his 17 million pieces of gold called the knights in shining armour "Siberian Shysters".What does he do? Back to his old tricks he uses a shell company called " Roman's Heavies"  and takes over payment of a £2 million loan made by Cope Industrial to help save Leeds United. Bats and "Roman's Heavies" agreed to pay interest and pay off the loan in 2009. Surprise, surprise Bats has failed to pay the interest an "Roman's Heavies" went into liquidation in June 2006. Where have we heard this story before? Come on the Football League ban this man from football- and the authorities in Monaco should deport him. Up to his usual tricks he got Leeds put into administration after they were regulated to league Division 1 in May 2007. This time he got caught out & unfortunately Leeds got a 15 point deduction for season 2007-8. Surely this is unfair on the footballers & the fans. Ought not the authorities have banned Bats from holdong any football office. The board at Sheffield Wednesday were right to ensure he didn't buy into their club. This time the "Wise" man shouldn't help save this wretch.
