Aldershot
Town
League Division 2
Aldershot Town Football Club was founded in the spring
of
1992 just after the closure of debt ridden fourth division club
Aldershot
F.C., who had been founded in 1925 and had been league members since
1932.
Like the old club, the new Aldershot football club played its home
games
at the Recreation Ground in Aldershot town centre. They joined the Ryman
(Diadora)
League Division Three for the 1992-93 season, and at the end of 1997-98
won
promotion to the Premier Division of the league. Two years later they
finished
runners-up in the Premier Division and just missed out on a place in
the Nationwide
Conference, but achieved this success at Ryman Premier Division
champions
at the end of the 2002-03 season. In 2003-04 Aldershot Town qualified
for
the Conference National promotion playoffs but lost on penalties to
Shrewsbury
Town in the final. The following year they lost in the semi-final to
Carlisle
United.

One of his first assignments at Bristol City was to assemble a squad of

Bournemouth - The Cherries
League Division 2
The present football club can trace
its
roots as far back as 1890 when Boscombe St. Johns Institute Football
Club
were playing in local football. They disbanded in 1899 and from the
remains
of that club, Boscombe FC were formed at a meeting under the
streetlights
in Gladstone Road, Boscombe. The Club competed in the Bournemouth and
District
Junior League playing at a ground in Castlemain Avenue, Pokesdown. They
moved
to Kings Park, adjacent to the current stadium in 1902 and were soon
emerging
as the top team in the town. After enjoying many local successes, they
joined
the Hampshire League and were attracting large crowds. In 1910 they
moved
to their own ground, named Dean Court the club continued to
thrive
and dominated the local football scene. The club signed their first
professional player in 1910, B.Penton, who signed from Southampton for
a £10 fee. The club then moved in to the South Eastern League but
this proved to be
a big leap and the side finished bottom of the table. With the outbreak
of
war in 1914, the progress of the club was halted and they returned to
the
Hampshire league in 1919. The club was ambitious and when the Third
Division
was formed in 1920, they moved up to the highly competitive Southern
League
as many clubs in that league went on to form the Third Division. After
three
years in the Southern League, the club applied for membership of the
Football
League. The application was accepted and Boscombe would be playing in
the
Third Division (South) in the 1923-24 season.

Cheltenham
Town - The Robins
League Division 2
Until very
recently
it was thought that Cheltenham Town Football Club was founded in 1892.
However,
recent evidence points to the origins being five years earlier when Mr
Albert
Close White returned to his native Cheltenham from college in London to
take
up a teaching post. While away on his studies Mr White discovered the
game
of association football and he is now credited with being the first
person
to introduce the sport to the town of Cheltenham. Trials were held at
the East Glos Cricket Ground in 1887 and the club was born.

League Division 1
Formed
in 1904, The Grecians moved to St James’s Park in 1906, where they
still play to this day. They have had a host of players playing for
them, who have moved on to play at the highest level including Lee
Sharpe, Cliff Bastin and Dick Pym, who all got caps for England. They were also
in the news in 2002-03 when Uri Geller became Honrary Co-Chairman. He
went
on to appoint Music King Michael Jackson and Star Wars Legend David
Prowse as honorary Directors. Since this however the running of the
club has been taken over by a supporters’ trust. Their biggest game of recent times was against
Manchester United in Dec 2004, and they caused a huge surprise by
holding United to a 0-0 draw.

Forest Green
Rovers Football Club
Conference
Forest Green Rovers were
Founder
members of the Gloucestershire County League in 1968-69 season, where
the enjoyed 7 years of football, before joining the Hellenic League
Premier Division.
They went on to become champions of this league in 1981, getting
promoted
to the Southern League Midland Division and also doing the double by
winning
the FA Vase also. In 1989, the club changed it’s name to Stroud,
however
this was short lived and was changed back to Forest Green Rovers in
1992.
In 1995, Rovers switched to play in the Southern Division, and won the
league
in the 96/97 season – in turn winning promotion to the Premier
Division.
Rovers didn’t stop there and went on to win the Southern League Premier
Division
in the debut season, earning promotion to the Conference league. They
have
since come runners up in the FA Trophy in 1999 losing narrowly to
Kingstonian
1-0 in the final. Also came runners up in 2001 again losing 1-0 but
this
time to Canvey Island.

Oxford United- The U's
Conference
Along
with many other clubs who eventually achieved league status, we started
in
1893 as an amateur club, called Headington United, a village team known
locally
as "the boys from up the hill".After the Second World War we were still
a
tiny set up playing in the Spartan League. But in 1949 the club was
elected to the Southern League and became a professional unit.By 1953
the side had
won the first of its Southern League Championships and in 1954 reached
the
Fourth Round of the FA Cup beating League clubs Millwall and Stockport
County
before losing 4-2 to Bolton Wanderers.
The appointment of the former Birmingham City manager Arthur Turner as
manager
in 1959 was another turning point in the club's history. And in 1960,
to
increase appeal to the whole city and increase national recognition,
the
club name was changed to Oxford United.Turner guided United to two more
Southern
League titles and when Accrington Stanley folded in 1962, Oxford United
was
elected to the Fourth Division of the Football League.

Plymouth
Argyle - The Pilgrims
Championship
AT the turn of the
last
century of the old millennium, F Howard Grose and W Pethybridge, both
former
pupils of Dunheved College in Launceston, Cornwall, shared rooms in the
newly-built
Argyll Terrace (sometimes known as Argyle Terrace) while working in
Plymouth.The
two men wanted to pursue their interest in football and it was
suggested
that it might be possible to form a new club by inviting old boys from
local
public schools to form a team. In those days, public schools and the
services
were the spawning-grounds of footballers The name Argyll
itself
derives from the Gaelic Earraghaidheal meaning "the boundary of the
Gaels".

In

The

who
played their football on the banks of the Itchen for 13 years before
moving
on. Unfortunately the team they were relegated to the Championship in

Torquay
United - The
Gulls
League
Division 2
The
history
of Torquay United doesn't begin with just one club; it begins with
three:
Torquay United, Ellacombe and Babbacombe. The merging of these three
clubs
is covered in The History Of Plainmoor elsewhere on this site, and it
is
a great story - a great story indeed. As
Torquay
Town, the club shared Plainmoor with their local rivals Babbacombe, and
for
the seasons running up to the beginning of the First World War, both
clubs
played in the Plymouth and District League
Pressure
began to mount in favour of Torquay Town and Babbacombe coming together.Torquay
Town and Babbacombe finally became Torquay United in 1921, and the new
club
joined the Western League .United
played four seasons in the Western League (finishing in sixth,
fourth, fifteenth
and sixth places respectively). In
1927,
after being crowned champions at the end of their fifth season in
the
Western League, the club decided to try for Football League status a
second
time.
They were elected to Division Three (South) of the Football League,
taking
the place of Welsh club Aberdare.

the cult football game 'subbuteo' launched their one-and-only
